WOD for Friday, Oct. 5th

Are you not sure who is going to be participating at the TJ’s Games? Do you think it might be weird to cheer for someone you don’t know personally? For the next few weeks I will be able to  help you.    I will be dedicating the blog to the amazing athletes who will be participating in the TJ’s Games.  Here are two of my favorites.

Josh Larson has been with us in Mill Valley for right around a year.  He slugged through the initial stages of the program and then decided to go all in.  A few heart to hearts with Marcus, a few personal sessions and he had a plan.  I think he would be the first to say that the last year has changed his life.  He’s lost a ton of weight and regained an amazing amount of athleticism.  Josh suffered a personal tragedy a few months ago.  He was out of the gym for a very short time.  What amazed me the most was that his demeanor never changed.  He is probably one of the most pleasant individuals you will ever have a chance to meet.  Don’t hesitate to go up and say hello to him at the Games.  You won’t regret it.

Mary Lou Miller probably wants to kill me right about now.  She is not exactly excited to be in the spotlight.  Too bad.  Not only has Mary Lou been with us since before we were CrossFit but she bounced back from two major episodes.  The first was the debacle of the 2009 TJ’s Games.  While all the competitors made the final left to finish the long, hilly run that was one of the events, poor Mary Lou and Lisa Smith made a right.  Winding their way up into the neighborhoods above the OG.  We were worried they would end up in Terra Linda.  See, Mary Lou has asthma. The throat closing, call the paramedics, kind.  When she first bought into CrossFit with the rest of us she would come back into the gym after a 400m run and have to walk around for about 90 seconds to make sure she could breath and not pass out.  Working her nutrition and improving her overall condition has made this tolerable, buy it will never go away.  Secondly, while starting her vacation in the Hamptons last year, she suffered a disc bulge that put her onto the floor of the airport, unable to move without excruciating pain.  After hitting the ER and getting the MRI done, all the Dr’s agreed that she would need surgery immediately.  She decided to suffer through the rest of the week unable to sit or lie down.  The only thing that didn’t hurt was standing.  After coming back home she saw Dr. Doug and started the long slow process of coming back into the gym.  This is a picture of her Deadlifting 185lbs for 5 reps earlier this week.  Every time I see her I get two things, a smile and a hug.  She’s our friend forever.

Here is our current list of TJ’s Games registrants.  Are you thinking what I’m thinking?  Where the heck is “so and so?” Do me a favor, call out your buddies and tell them to register. Nice and easy. They will be treated like a rockstar all day.  They will push themselves to new limits and be changed forever for having done so.  They will be cheered on as though their workout matters in some really meaningful way, because it does. They will also be eligible for some cool prizes, but the biggest prize of all will be the feeling they’ll have after they finish.  We have to get the T shirt orders in by this weekend so everyone needs to get registered by Friday night.
