TJ’s Gym WOD for Tues. Apr. 3rd

Had the pleasure of coaching an evening class which I haven’t done in ages.  Ali, Kathie P, Timmy P and Mary Bauce made for a wonderful night.

“I only” and the DFL

I wouldn’t call it annoying and I wouldn’t call it depressing.  I don’t know what to call it other than perplexing.  I yell “Jamiejimjams, what was your weight and time?” and in response I get “13:10 but I only  used 35lbs.”  What’s with the “I only?”  What your telling me is that your comparing yourself.  Comparing yourself to the RX’ed folks or the gal who did a few pounds more or whatever.  I get that comparisons are a necessity.  You see improvement that way but it’s supposed to be comparing you against you.  Sleep, torso length versus limb length, types of muscle fibers, somotatype, training schedule, non gym related stressors, diet.  I could go on and on as to why comparisons with others suck.  I also understand that the highest end athletes do it as well as the folks during the intro.  It’s human nature.  But let me tell you what the coaches are really thinking.

Great job.

Simple as that.  What you guys don’t see is what we see over the course of a week, month and year.  The subtle improvements in strength, flexibility and coordination.  Understanding the hours of work and concentration you have put in.  The empathy we have for what you are going through because we do it too. There is no eye rolling.  There is no disbelief in how light you went or how many modifications you had to make.  You are here, willingly getting your ass kicked because an average life is not an option for you.  You want more.  We see you sweating or crying or heaving.  We’ve been there and our hearts swell with pride that you would take on the beast we threw at you.

At some point we hope you are willing to take a big chance.    You take another step outside your comfort zone.  You might just be the farthest out compared to anyone else in class.  You know what happens to that person sometimes?  DFL, Dead F*%cking Last.  It happens.  Everyone is done and has put their stuff away and you’re still at it.  You chose the wrench.  And you know what the coach is thinking?  God Bless you for that.  Not everybody is willing to do it.  Jason Daniel did it today and it was awesome (pic to come).  DFL is a badge of honor and something that happens to all of us.  It should be a moment of pride, not shame, because anyone who knows anything about the stuff sees it exactly that way.
