TJ’s Gym WOD for Sat. Jan. 7th

TJ’s kids.  Literally.

Dear Friends,

      As most of you are aware, my husband, John Riccio, succumbed to Stage IV gastric adenocarcinoma (stomach cancer), on November 24, 2008 at the age of 50.  I am writing to invite you to the first gastric cancer fundraiser being sponsored by the newly-formed Gastric Cancer Fund on Saturday, January 7, 2012.

      The Gastric Cancer Fund is the first organization dedicated to helping fight gastric  cancer.  Although gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, it is one of the most underfunded forms of cancer research.  Through education, research, support and advocacy, the organization is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by this disease .   This event hopes to raise funds in order to allow further research so that we can better understand and attack this silent, deadly disease.

   The following are some statistics in regards to gastric cancer:

  – Stomach cancer is the 4th most common malignancy in the world, is the 2nd leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide;

 –  Approximately 21,520 new cases of stomach cancer were estimated to be diagnosed in the US in 2011;

 –  Over 10,000 Americans were estimated to die from stomach cancer in 2011;

 –  Stomach cancer is most often diagnosed at a late stage with a poor prognosis; the overall five-year survival rate for      stomach cancer is only 22%;

–  The National Cancer Institute invested ONLY $12.4 million to fund stomach cancer research in 2008;

 – ONLY 0.26% of the NCI’s 2008 budget was dedicated to stomach cancer (the LEAST amount of NCI research dollars in 2008 compared to ALL other cancers).

     The fundraiser will offer us an opportunity to participate in the event for a suggested minimum donation of $40, which will include the chance to enjoy a symbolic walk/run/march around Infineon Raceway’s 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course.  A shorter, less hilly course will also be available for those adults or children who wish to do a shorter distance .  Each participant will receive a T-shirt and light refreshments following the event.  The raceway’s Wine Country Winner’s Circle will also be available for those who wish to take pictures before or after the event.

      Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and the walk/run will begin at 10:00 a.m.  No advance donation/registration is required; just show up the day of the event.  Please note:  Only cash and checks will be accepted.  Checks should be made payable to the V Foundation, and please note “Gastric Cancer Fund” on the memo line.

      Infineon Raceway is approximately eight miles east of Novato, just off of Highway 121.  Enter the speedway at the main gate, which is your first left after getting onto Highway 121.

     Those who cannot attend the event but wish to make a donation should mail the donation to Infineon Raceway, Highways 37 & 21, Sonoma, CA 94576.  Donations can also be made online @ .   Be sure to make note that this is a gift to the Gastric Cancer Fund.

      It would mean a great deal to me personally to see you at this event.  It is my hope that this will be the first of a yearly tradition in honor of John. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.  I look forward to seeing you all on the 7th.

    Judy Macchello Riccio
